Philosophy / Approach to Teaching:

Teaching can be an isolated profession. As principal of Lumen Christi High School, my goal is to create a community of teachers, who collaborate in creating lesson plans, work together on teaching strategies to increase student learning, and continues to grow professionally through study groups, interactive classes, and mentoring.

Biography:

Ms. Brewer has over 15 years of teaching experience and has been with LCHS since its beginnings. She earned her qualifications in Biochemistry at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, in Education at Alaska Pacific University and is a Highly Qualified teacher in Biology.
She views teaching as a two-way activity and it should involve both students and teacher. Learning needs to be as much experience as possible in a structured and safe environment.
In addition to teaching, Debbie is also the State Ed. Advisor for D.A.R.E.  Alaska. In summer she enjoys teaching a summer Forensic Science Camp that is sponsored by FOAST.

Michael Bauzon

Biography:
Michael Bauzon moved to Alaska in 2005 and finished his B.S. in Mathematics at UAA in 2007 where he has tutored math at the Learning Resources Center Math Lab. He also has tutored privately for several years. Mr. Bauzon's interest in mathematics and teaching made him pursue graduate studies and he received his M.A. in teaching from UAS in 2009 . Michael has worked with middle school, high school, and college students who have wide ranges of learning capabilities.  Mr. Bauzon started teaching at Lumen Christi with the 2007-08 school year. First he taught a single class, Trigonometry, but since then he has returned as a full time high school math and chemistry teacher. His philosophy for teaching math was developed over years of working one-on-one with various students, including some with learning disabilities. In addition to educational philosophies of progressivism, essentialism, and theories developed from Bloom and Gardener, one of Mr. Bauzon’s personal philosophies and goals in teaching math is to remove the fear that often accompanies learning these subjects.

James DeCrane

Biography:
James DeCrane began adulthood as a photojournalist, reporter and television news producer. Four years ago, he made the switch to teaching, a move he said was much more meaningful that allows him “to follow and talk about Christ, the greatest teacher and storyteller of all.” Born in Ohio, Mr. DeCrane grew up in upstate New York. His undergraduate degree is in Communications and Spanish from Indiana University. Currently, he is finishing his Master’s of Education at Wayland Baptist University. James is a freelance writer, an amateur artist, avid outdoorsman and animal lover who hopes to own dogs and horses again someday. Mr. DeCrane plans on spending the summer living and studying in Oaxaca, Mexico. In the future, he hopes to write a book and do mission work in Latin America.

Biography:
Mr. Bob has been teaching Church History at Lumen Christi for 6 years. He also serves as the youth minister at St. Benedict Church, a role he has had for the past 12 years. Bob also provides opportunities for the students to participate in youth ministry functions at the parish and diocese. The retreat program is especially popular with the students. Bob graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in Biology and a teaching certificate for sciences in grades 6-12. He also was awarded certificates in the Ministry Formation Program in the Rockford Diocese and the Youth Ministry Certificate from the Center for Ministry Development. When not at the church, Bob is with his wife and six kids enjoying life in Alaska. Bob believes his class challenges the students. He wants them to learn, develop their faith, and prepare them for college.

Antje Carlson, Ph.D.

Biography:
Antje Carlson has over 10 years of teaching experience in a variety of educational settings, including at the university. She is about to conclude her first year at Lumen Christi. She earned her master's degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage and completed her doctoral studies at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, OH. Her academic interest is in the area of language learning and she strongly believes in a simple, yet elegant and eloquent use of any language. Through her belief in lifelong learning, cultural understanding, and critically reflective-thinking, Mrs. Carlson strives to prepare her students for college and beyond. In addition to teaching English at LCHS, Dr. Carlson also convenes adult German classes in the evenings at the school. She is a founding member of a public charter school, Rilke Schule German School of Arts and Sciences, a K-8 German immersion school in Anchorage.
Born in Germany, Antje grew up in Germany and Austria but has called Alaska home since 1994. When she is not in the classroom, she, her husband Martin and their two adopted German Shorthair Pointers Merry (Christmas) and Taig can be found on camping grounds and hiking trails throughout our majestic state. Around August you can also catch Mrs. Carlson collecting wild mushrooms. Antje is a ferocious reader, passionate cook, amateur photographer, and avid Nordic walker.

Biography:
Ms. Stacy Ruebelmann has been teaching students for 11 years, and she has been with Lumen Christi for the past 6 years of her career.   Ms. Ruebelmann graduated from Alaska Pacific University with a degree in K-8 Education and an emphasis in Environmental Science.  She has previously taught at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Elementary and Aquarian Charter Elementary.  Her love for the Catholic Church inspired Stacy to complete Youth Ministry courses, and she is now working towards her Master’s Degree in Theology. In addition to all her school work, Ms. Ruebelmann coordinates LCHS's Winter and Spring drama productions and encourages students to participate in community services. Ms. Ruebelmann strongly believes ALL students are capable of learning, and in that learning, they become successful.
