What an awesome Catholic Schools Week so far! From Monday’s Mass with the Archbishop to our 3rd Annual State of the School to yesterday’s delivery of food and other goodies to local fire and police stations, our students, staff, and faculty have been showcasing what Catholic schools are all about: Faith, Family, and Excellence! Please remember two other highlights this weekend:
Saturday: We invite all to our All Archdiocese Parish Basketball Night at 5pm. Our boys basketball team is 10-2, so come on out and cheer them on to victory over the Point Lay/Kali Wolverines (Qavikk). Game starts at 5pm with fun halftime activities for the kids! Anyone wearing Lumen spirit wear or with a parish bulletin ticket gets in for free!!
Sunday: Please consider attending the 10:30am Mass at St. Benedicts to say thank you for their generous 18-years of support to our school community. Students in attendance should wear their Mass day uniform. We need student volunteers for lectors, altar servers, hospitality, gift bearers, and extraordinary ministers. Plug in your Super Bowl crock pots in the morning, come to Mass with us, and then settle in to watch the Rams beat the Patriots!
We also wish our Lady Archangels good luck and safe travels as they head to Nenana for a tournament!
Thank you parents for getting permission slips in for Monday’s Mass at the Co-Cathedral!
As soon as we reschedule our 11th grade retreat we will send information and permission slips.
Please join us each morning through February 4 in the Main hall at 7:50 to pray for the respect and protection of all human life.
We have Mass on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:15am in our Archangel Chapel, and each Thursday at 9am at St. Benedict Church. Please join us!
St. Benedict winter retreat will be held Feb. 15 – 17. Please join us. Registration forms are in the school office or see Mrs. Loeffler.
We are begin our planning for our March 5th Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner. Volunteers will be appreciated! Donations of pancake mix, syrup, juice, bacon/sausage, and pancake topping will be appreciated!! Proceeds go to fund Campus Ministry activities and to help a local charity.
Youth Night is held at St. Benedict Church each Wednesday – all high school Lumen students
are welcome! Several Theology teachers offer extra credit for Faith events attended outside
school hours. Students can check with teachers.
Please remember the following in your prayers this week.
For our athletes who are travelling this week
For those who have lost loved ones
All first responders
Any prayer requests that families would like listed here in Lumen News and also in the Lumen Prayer Book of Intentions may be sent directly to Mrs. Loeffler.
Archangel Sports Update:
Junior High volleyball continues with another Jamboree this Friday (2/1) from 3p-6:30p in the Lumen Gym. Our newest Archangels are both doing great, and are having a great time doing it!
Outstanding news from the Boy’s basketball trip to Kodiak last weekend (1/24-1/27) – three solid wins! While there, the team spent time with students from St. Mary’s, Kodiak’s Catholic elementary school. Way to be great role models, Archangels.
Back at home, both the Girls and Boys succumbed to Nikolaevsk on Tuesday night (1/29). Wednesday night (1/30) saw the Girls fall to Kalskag in overtime, but the Boys prevailed with a decisive win after exceptional play in the 4th quarter.
The Girls left this morning for a tournament in Nenana – the entire school, students & staff – turned out to cheer them out the door and onto the road! We wish them safe driving there & back as well as successful games and a great time together as a team. Go Lady Archangels!
Mark your calendars for the upcoming games:
- Feb 2nd – Port Lay, 5p, Boys only (Girls in Nenana)
- Feb 5th – Sand Point, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 6th – King Cove, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys (Note: this game was initially scheduled for the 4th but moved due to travel schedules)
- **Feb 7th – Wainwright, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 8th – Anaktuvuk Pass, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
**LOCATION CHANGE**: Games on the 6th, 7th & 8th will be held at The Arctic Rec Center (4855 Arctic Blvd.) due to Gala preparations in the Lumen gym.
Our students do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following for off-campus excellence in the past week!
Tommy Simono (9th grade) who skis for Service High School competed last weekend in the Besh Cup Ski Race down in Soldotna, and who will ski for the final race in the Cup this weekend in Fairbanks. Pending the outcome of that race, Tommy could be part of the AK Junior National Team! Congratulations to him on his season so far, and we’ll be rooting for him this weekend.
*Parents/Guardians – if your student has done something that deserves “Spotlight” recognition, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know!
Colonial Fife Lessons
Learn to play Colonial Fife with 8th grader Daniel McConnell. Cost is $18 for the fife. See Daniel for more information, and sign up with Mrs. Gore in the Office. Fife demonstration TBA.
Parent-Teacher Conferences Schedule
Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. As a reminder (and heads up for new Lumen families), both Thursday 2/14 and Friday, 2/15 will be half days with early dismissal at 12:20p.
Thursday will be a Friday “A” schedule (students attend periods 1-3-5) and Friday will be a Friday “B” schedule (periods 2-4-6.)
Conferences will run from 3p-7p on Thursday and 1p-4p on Friday. They occur on a ‘first-come-
first-served’ basis in the Student Room located next to the Office. Parents, if you’re unable to make either date, please email Ms. Gore at the Front Desk (email@example.com) who will forward the message on to your student’s teachers so alternate arrangements can be made.
Last week we included a notice here about a potential service disruption for Verizon users with our “Remind.Com” messaging system. This issue has been resolved between Verizon & Remind, so no worries if you’re a Verizon user – you’ll still get messages direct to your phone (email) without issue.
There’s still time to place a SCRIP order if you haven’t, but submit it by midnight tonight! (Thursday, Jan 31.) Place your order online at www.shopwithscrip.com – if you’re setting up an account on shopwithscrip.com for the first time, Lumen’s enrollment code is: B968B67E44853. Questions on the Scrip program can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for supporting Lumen Christi’s fundraising efforts by purchasing gift cards through Scrip!
WINTER WONDERLAND Gala & Auction
Lots of ASAP’s to mention!
There are only a handful of tickets left, with certain they’ll be gone in the next day or two. If you’ve been putting off buying yours, do so ASAP or you’ll have to wait until next year to attend
If you have basket items, completed baskets or wine (especially higher end bottles!) to donate, please drop those off ASAP.
There will be a basket wrapping party this Saturday, Feb. 2nd from 2p-5p in the Lumen Library. No crafty skills necessary, just be willing to help wrap with cellophane paper and attach bows! There’s also more ironing of table linens to be done, drop in for any amount of time you’ve got and iron here, or take a tub home and do it in front of your favorite Netflix binge.
Thank you for all of your help in making this a successful auction for our school and our students!
Student Volunteer Opportunities:
We’re still looking for more help before, during and after the Gala! We would encourage as many Junior High & High School students as possible to stay after school on 2/8 and work from 1-5p, pizza will be provided for lunch! High school students only can sign up to help the night of the event, from 4:30-10:30p. All students can sign up to help clean up the day after on Sunday, 2/10 from 10a-2p. Thanks for encouraging your kids to sign up & pitch in to help.
St. Benedict Parish is looking for high school student volunteers to help with upcoming renovations to the church sanctuary. Volunteers needed on Sunday, Feb 3rd, from 2-6pm at the church, wear old clothes and bring a facemask. (Yes, that’s Super Bowl weekend, but if you aren’t a Rams or Patriots fan, this is a great opportunity to earn Faith in Action hours supporting our host parish!)
